Preserving Your Pearls

Welcome to Walsh Bros, we want to share some of our knowledge and expertise with you, to help you give longevity of your pearl jewellery.

Why do Pearls Require Special Care?

Pearls, cherished throughout history and cultures, possess a unique charm that demands careful attention. Unlike most gems, pearls have a delicate chemical composition, making them susceptible to acids, perspiration, and scratches. Follow our Pearl Care Guide below.

Choose the Right String or Setting

Selecting the appropriate string and knotting for your pearl necklace is crucial for its protection. Different materials offer varied levels of durability and resistance to dirt and grime. If you are considering our repair service, choose the type of thread that suits your lifestyle, and opt for a knot between each pearl to prevent them from striking each other and to guard against the infiltration of grime into the drill holes.

How To Clean Pearl Jewellery

Cleaning pearls set in earrings or pieces requires a gentle touch. Use warm water, mild soap, and a soft brush to maintain their luster. However, be cautious not to immerse your necklace in any liquid, as excess moisture can harm the drill holes. Our recommended pearl spray offers a specialised formula to gently remove impurities, leaving your pearls gleaming.

Cleaning Your Pearl Necklace:

  1. Spray pearls with a thin layer of the cleaning solution.
  2. Wipe clean with the provided microfibre cloth.
  3. Inspect each pearl; if needed, re-wipe with the cloth.
  4. Dry your necklace with a lint-free cloth.
  5. Lay it on a natural cotton towel to absorb moisture.

  • Never use heat-producing appliances to dry pearls.
  • Clean your necklace before storing if worn against the skin.
  • Avoid immersing pearls in liquids.

Storage Recommendations

To minimise accidental contact and scratches, store your pearl jewelry separately from other pieces. Keep them away from sources of extreme heat or cold, such as fireplaces, open windows, or direct sunlight.

Wearing Your Pearls

Exercise caution when applying perfumes, colognes, and hairsprays, especially with pearls, as they react poorly to acids and alcohols. Avoid wearing pearls during household or outdoor chores to protect their delicate beauty.
